Turkey – ban on Google

ataturkToday I saw on article on a Dutch newspaper about “ADD want to ban Google from Turkish internet”…..
ADD is an organization who is protecting the name of Atatürk – the founder of Turkey and Turkishness.
And they want to ban Google from the Turkish internet – because you can find anti Atatürk articles via their search engine.
AND – in Turkey it is forbidden to insult or even criticize Atatürk…..!!

There is even a big chance the judge in Turkey will listen to this complaint – as there is already a ban on YouTube because of the same reason….!

It is needless to say how I feel about such a ban uh…??
(as I am a huge believer of freedom of speech – especially on the internet…)

But the following is really interesting; how or why would a country put a ban (and even make it a criminal act) on criticism or maybe even insult “a dead person”……
Or maybe even an imaginary person for that matter……

How can it be – that people could go to prison for “insulting a founder of a country or a God….”….??
Or – as Google and YouTube – be banned…??

Such a question – I think – has nothing to do with freedom or right of religion – but all about freedom of speech…..

Is insulting a religion even a real insult…?
Is criticizing a dead person still criticizing..?
And what is even wrong with criticizing..?

Furthermore; the Judge who banned YouTube and the organisation ADD are probably against Turkey being a member of the European Community uh…??

One Response to “Turkey – ban on Google”

  1. The only positive side effect here is that Turkey is not likely to join the already oversized European Union anytime soon…

The underlying reason for the censorship is, of course, the fear that the secular state will break down, replaced by an islamic state.
