Microsoft; 15 thousand people leaving because of job cuts?

A company who’s real profit is normally a huge percentage of the turnover of the company - has also announced huge layoffs;
The rumor is going that about 17% of the people will have to leave Microsoft – which will make an amount of 15 thousand people (out of 90 thousand) worldwide! The real announcement will probably be on the 15th of January; a week before the Q2 earning report will be announced.
Has this anything to do with the “financial crisis†– or is the company more and more automated..?
