GeenStijl – needed to go to the police…

>from GeenStijl

GeenStijl

It is a sad thing…..

I am really wondering where our nice freedom of “Internet” is going…..
Once it was a nice public place – where you could call people names…. where you could pretend to be someone else….
Now the people of GeenStijl where invited for a “conversation”  on a police station in Amsterdam…..

And what did they do wrong…???

I am still wondering – but shortly;

4 cases where reported; “bad comments” of people reacting on an article…..
One was the Amsterdam politician Rita Mungra; some kind of reference to the VOC was made by one of the readers of an article about her….
She was so stupid… (oooooh – can I say the word “stupid”…?? Or will I be asked to go to the police station now…??) to threaten the people of GeenStijl – and gave them a list of all the important politicians she knows…… And yep – GeenStijl did publish that list……. On which she called more angry and left a voice-mail….. which ofcouse has been published also…..
Wierd part is….. GeenStijl was (supposely) not allowed to publish this…. HAHAHA

And then an organisation which work is prevending Discrimination on the Internet (Meldpunt Discriminatie Internet (MDI)) did 3 cases with total of 14 comments made (in 2006 !!!).
Weird part is; they officially first need to warn the publisher that people are making bad comments – so the publisher (this time GeenStijl) could delete those comments….. But uh… MDI forgot…??
And then the MDI even said to a newspaper a couple of days ago that GeenStijl is one of the BEST publishers who deletes comments after the MDI warns them…..

THEN WHY NOW A POLICE CASE…???

(go figure; GeenStijl has a total of 11 MILLION comment; 14 where wrong…….)

My point…???
Some people and organisations are so incredably STUPID and IGNORANT…..
Some weblogs and websites are so incredably STUPID and IGNORANT…..
But – go and arrest the real bad guys……!!!

Not the ones you think are just stupid and ignorant…..

  1. GeenStijl is not the only one that got a letter from the police, see here:

    http://hoeiboei.web-log.nl/hoeiboei/2008/06/ontbieding-aan.html

It’s not only our freedom on the internet, our freedom in general is going more and more going down the drain. For decades we spent literally trillions to prevent that we had to live under a totalitarian system and we were willing to blow up the whole planet with nuclear weapons to defend our freedom. Now, less than 20 years after the end of the Cold War, more and more we see that certain nasty aspects of that totalitarian system is creeping into our lives through the backdoor. We should be worried, very worried, about these developments, the foundations of a future totalitarian system in the “free” world are laid right here, right now…

Anyone who thinks that freedom is valueable should resist against these developments. Because the police state begins where you stop defending your freedom. (De politiestaat begint waar jij stopt met het verdedigen van je vrijheid.)

  2. I know it is very hard to put a “regulation” into what you can – and what you can NOT do on the internet…..
But it is very true…. with transport/internet etc it seems our world is getting wider and bigger – but with all the regulations/camera’s etc = our world is getting smaller and smaller….

  3. I wonder why the guy from GeenStijl actually went to the police. Although he changed the date to visit the policestation, he is doing exactly what they wanted him to do: obeying authority and all that under their conditions, not his… It seems to be bad idea anyways to talk to the police. If you really did something wrong they can arrest you and you will be prosecuted. Otherwise there is no reason at all for the police to talk to you.

  4. The publicity is a nice thing for GeenStijl…..
But what else can you do….? Say no…?? And don’t go…??

  5. Yes, don’t go. It seems to be tactics from the police with no legal grounds. It’s your right not talk to the police if you don’t want to, and the police has the right to arrest you if you commited a crime. That’s crystal clear.

In this case, the police doesn’t have anything against this person that would justify an arrest, but they want to hear him out about this case anyways. So they can try it by sending a letter like that with the “ontbieding”, but that doesn’t mean you should, it lacks any legal grounds and it’s probably better just to ignore it.

  6. The PVV, not really my favourite party, is already asking questions in parliament. Question number 4 sums it up perfectly.

  7. I even have to agree with these questions….
    (and I am also NOT a pro-pvv person…..!!!)

  8. I enjoyed your writing style and I’ve added you to my Reader. Keep these posts coming.

  9. Maybe the writer can explain what calling people names has to do with “freedom”, and with opinion for that matter?

Lots of disinformation here too. The MDI filed 200 complaints and not 14. Do your homework before copypasting geenstijl propaganda.

The ‘couple of days’ link is quoted only half here. The 200 cases are still pending and will not be withdrawn after just one year good behaviour. That is wahat the MDI thinks, not what you make of it.

  10. The writer is more trying to explain how the internet was “working in the old days”…. no government who was interfering.

Furthermore; if you talk about disinformation – it would come very handy if you name sources…. ;)
–> 200 complaints in 4 years – CAN (not say IS) make 14 in 2006….. Matter of reading..

AND – it seems you are not really against calling people names uh…??
