University lecturer Dmitrijs Smirnov told a newspaper the nation’s currency, the lat, was heading for devaluation. He advised people to withdraw their money from the bank or change it.
Then the secret police arrested Smirnov and they locked him up for two days. According to the secret police he tried to destabilize Latvia’s financial system. Smirnov: “I was scared. I am not a lawyer but I also cannot think a man can be detained for his opinion or advice in a newspaper.”
Finance Minister Atis Slakteris admitted the IMF wants Latvia to devalue the lat.
Smirnov says he will watch what he says in the future: “Of course I will be more careful. I don’t want again to go to prison.”
Mind you, Latvia is a member of the European Union! Now a citizen of this country has to fear the secret police and he has to resort to self-censorship to stay out of prison..!
This should infuriate all 500 million citizens in the EU, but I know this is not going to happen. The general population just doesn’t seem to care, but when the population finally realizes it’s ruled by tyrants, it will be too late…

About “the world is going mad”….. not only the “normal people”- also the GovernmentS….. and yes – with an S – as in more than one. Because if other Governments just accept this behavior of the Latvia Government – they are guilty as well !!
Yes, it’s another sign of growing madness… Paradoxically, there is an enormous interest in World War II. The number of new books, documentaries and what not about this subject that comes out every year is gigantic. They all tell the story what happens if tyrants get in power, but for some reason it’s not enough for the general population to recognize that current developments will lead to the same thing.
This time there is no clearly visible dictator that wants to conquer the world, the road to tyranny is much more subtle in our time. The end result will be the same if we let it happen: death and suffering on a massive scale.
People hear and see excessively about evil in the past, it makes them deaf and blind for evil in the future…
