Atheist Bus Campaign – stop worrying

atheistIf you are the “non believer”…. and you see a bus go by with the text “all non christians would burn in hell”….. would you get upset..??
Not me…..
But would I like such a message….?
Mmmmh – I would say; “time to give the publishers of that ad an answer”…..

And Ariane Sherine gave that answer !!

She wrote an article in the Guardian and asked the atheist to donata 5 pound to put an another advert with that answer….

And the answer came !!
The Atheist Bus Campaign started with “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.
They started on the 21st of October 2008; they wanted to raise 5500 pounds to get 30 buses running with that campaign….. on the 6th of January 2009; 800 buses all over the UK !!

The Atheist Bus Campaign did need 5.500 pounds – the counter today (12th of January 2009) is at 143.000 pound….

As a result there are also a couple of spin-offs all over the world;

USA; Washington DC in November 2008 with the slogan “Why believe in a God? Just be good for goodness’ sake.”

Australia one got some rejected; “Atheism – because there is no credible evidence“  and the  “Atheism – Celebrate reason! Sleep in on Sunday mornings”
(but yeah – I am not surprised with that one; I have seen more controversial policies in that country…this example and this example)

In all honesty – I do think it is about time that this kind of movement is coming; and no – it has NOTHING to do with being anti Christians – and anti “any kind of believe”…..
There are also people who just DO NOT believe in anything….
and maybe sometimes (just sometimes) are getting tired of all the Christian/Hindoe/Muslim/Jew/etc etc messages…..and they do have the same right with publishing their “non believe”……

  1. I was wondering when this would happen. Although I’m not atheist, I have beliefs that perhaps aren’t of the norm. But I’m told I’m BAD-WRONG etc. because I’ve got a different belief.

I guess someone just decided they got to have their turn at the ads eh?

    ;)

I think everyone has the right to say what they believe… Interesting post!

  2. WTF is wrong with Australia these days???

  3. @ Monica – thanx for your reaction. I started reading the definition of Atheist on Wikipedia – my conclusion; yes – I am an atheist. But there are so many different kinds…..

    @ Rudy – only these days..?? ;)

  4. My son is an atheist, but different than I understood – like you said so many different kinds. I respect his decision. I personally have a totally different look at it… so I’m not sure at all what I’m called. I say I’m spiritual but non-Christian.

I think everyone has the right to be exactly a part of whatever faith or non-faith they choose. Period.

    Again, great post.

  5. Most wars throughout history are based on religious belief… I’d love to live in a world where people didn’t ram any belief system down my throat – just believe in yourself and try and do what you believe is right. I’d like to think that people could do good without bringing religion into it, after all there was a time when none of the current religions existed – were all people before their emergence “bad”? Ah well I’ve had my say lol

  6. There are many definitions and types of atheism and also agnosticism. It’s hard to put my views on the subject in one nicely defined category, but I feel comfortable with the notion of “ignosticism”. The basic idea is that other definitions assume too much about the concept of a deity or deities. To me, before you can discuss if a god or gods exists or not, a coherent definition should be given what is meant with ‘god’ or ‘gods’. If that definition can’t be falsified, the question if god or gods exists is entirely meaningless. Religions like christendom, islam and judaism (all theistic believes) take their deity as a personal god, and it’s impossible to falsify their definitions. So it’s meaningless to discuss their existence.

  7. It seems it has a meaning – you are not going to tell me that all those wars where meaningless uh…??

  8. Yes, I see your point… It’s insane when you think about it.

  9. [...] you know – the freedom of speech is a high law in my opinion…. And maybe you also read the Atheist article – so you can say I am not “participating in any kind of religion”…. The [...]
